Diet
If you want a better sex drive then don’t cut out takeaways, donuts, popcorn, and ice-cream. Although these may not be the healthiest of snacks, fantastically all of these things can help boost your libido. According to researchers in Chicago the smell of takeaways, donuts and popcorn increased men’s penile blood flow. Similarly, it is the smell of vanilla that boosts libidos. Plus the calcium content in a typical bowl of this tasty treat (200 milligrams) can also make orgasms more powerful and intense.
Getting a promotion
Great news – you’ve got a promotion. That means you can finally go on that once in a lifetime vacation or buy that super swish sports car. However, ladies and gentleman, although a promotion is good for your bank balance it is bad news for your sex drive as a new job title typically involves more stress. Being stressed is terrible for your sex drive because this means that higher levels of cortisol is released; the hormone that suppresses oestrogen and testosterone.
Having kids
Screaming children, early morning wake up calls and a huge amount of responsibility has to be the number one nemesis for the sex drive. Not only are you too tired and stressed to even think about having a steamy night under the covers, you no longer have the privacy to do it whenever and wherever you want to. Plus, for all of the ladies, if you’re breast feeding you will have a higher level of prolactin – a hormone that naturally lowers your sex drive.
Being single
Although you might have thought that being married is bad for your sex life, it turns out that being single isn’t great either. Researcher Dr Michel Odent explains that we all need oxytocin to get sexually aroused. Odent also explains that we can boost our oxytocin levels by having skin-to-skin contact with our partners. So sadly, if you’re currently single you’ll be missing out on all of that intimate, skin-to-skin, oxytocin-inducing loving.
Adult movies
We all know that adult movies aren’t real, but they do have a very real impact on our love lives. Watching too many kinky movies can over-stimulate the neurotransmitter that controls our sexual pleasure. If this occurs too many times, then the brain can find it difficult to become aroused. If you’re guilty of indulging too much in adult watching then try to cut back a little – your sex drive should soon increase.
Going on a night out
Fancy a big night out? If you’re going to have a big one, but want to pull a hot guy or girl as well, then make sure you stick to the mocktails. More than two units a day will lower your libido and although women are more likely to have sex after drinking, according to findings those women who do have sex when drunk enjoy it less. To cut down on your alcohol intake and boost your libido drink water between each alcoholic drink or head to the movies rather than a bar.
Having a blocked nose
Not only do you look horrible when you have a blocked nose, your sex drive is also affected. For the girls, a blocked nose will stop you from sniffing male sweat, which according to the scientists at the University of California will turn you on. For the guys, not being able to smell will prevent you from picking up the smells that turn you on; like lavender and pumpkin pie, oranges, apples and chocolate.
Skipping the gym
Although lounging in front of the TV sounds like a good idea, swapping your slippers for your running shoes is the worst thing you can do if you want to get more loving in your life. If you skip regular exercise your sex drive is lower, your self-confidence may be affected, plus you miss out on that great mood enhancer you get after being active. Plus, researchers found that men who exercise for one hour, three times a week have improved sexual function, more sex and better sexual satisfaction. So next time the couch is calling you, think about your under-the-sheets action and make a date with the gym instead.
The rain
No-one likes the rain. You can’t eat out, go to the beach or check out scantily clad hotties. Although these are all great reasons for not liking the rain, we have another complaint you can add to your list. When it rains you cannot make full use of the sun’s rays, which increase testosterone levels. According to studies, as doses of vitamin D increase, which is gained from sunshine, testosterone levels rise. Just one hour in the sun can significantly boost this sex hormone. Remember though, stay safe in the sun; being burnt is not a good look.
Going to the candy shop
Although candy shops are terrible for your teeth, the next time you head out for a sweet treat remember that certain items are bad for your sex drive too. Steer clear of any candy that contains liquorice. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that men’s testosterone levels reduced dramatically when the men ate liquorice supplements.
